Govt Allots ₹820 Cr for 100 New Quantum Research Labs

The Union government has announced a ₹820-crore investment to establish advanced quantum research facilities across India, including 100 quantum teaching laboratories in educational institutions.

According to Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), these labs will train students in emerging quantum technologies under the National Quantum Mission (NQM). More than 500 proposals were submitted, from which 100 institutions will be selected. Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the first lab at IIT Bombay, highlighting that the initiative will strengthen India’s position as a global leader in quantum technologies.

The Minister also announced plans to create four advanced quantum fabrication and central facilities, with labs to be set up at IISc Bengaluru, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Delhi. These centers will support research in quantum sensing, computing, and materials—marking a significant step toward achieving technological self-reliance. “The creation of such infrastructure is a decisive step toward technological independence,” Singh said.
