Siruthuli, with support from Indo-Tech Transformers, has launched a comprehensive initiative to treat sewage and restore the Sundapalayam stream in Coimbatore district.
The project aims to revive a 1.5-km stretch of the stream through cleaning and desilting, along with the construction of three check dams to enhance water retention, groundwater recharge and percolation. Wastewater treatment measures will include the dosing of treatment solutions, the creation of constructed wetlands and the planting of vetiver along the stream bunds. Siruthuli said this integrated approach is expected to improve groundwater quality within six months and lead to the gradual restoration of the stream.
The Sundapalayam Periapallam originates in the Marudhamalai hills and drains into the Noyyal river, supporting farming communities cultivating coconut, areca nut and banana. However, rapid urbanisation has resulted in the daily discharge of untreated sewage into the stream, significantly degrading water quality.
Siruthuli has been studying sewage inflows and treatment options in the area, with early vetiver plantations already showing encouraging results. The project was formally launched on December 31, 2025, in the presence of Janakiraman Sarvesvaran, Consul General of India in Sydney.
