Green Go-Ahead: Madras Engineering Industries Aims for Full Certification

Madras Engineering Industries (MEI) Pvt Ltd, a Chennai-based auto parts manufacturer with over $100 million in annual revenue, is set to achieve green certification for all its products following its successful supply approval from Volvo Group Trucks. The company is preparing to deliver fossil-free ferrous castings to Volvo’s global factories, with shipments starting in Q1 2025, aiming to reduce Volvo’s CO2 emissions by 12,400 tonnes annually.

MEI joins a select group of Indian suppliers providing fossil-free components to Volvo, alongside Rane and Brakes India. Priya Sriram, MEI’s Managing Director, highlighted the challenges of transforming a foundry into a green-certified operation, a step that now paves the way for broader sustainable practices across the company.

Joint Managing Director Sriram Sivaram emphasized MEI’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, viewing it as a driver of both financial and environmental returns. MEI aims to be carbon neutral by 2030, which includes transitioning to 100% electric forklifts and renewable energy.

Volvo Group’s Mark Bamber commended MEI’s achievements, noting the significance of their green transformation in an industry traditionally seen as polluting. MEI’s ongoing partnership with Volvo reflects a shared commitment to sustainability.
