The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to establish a biogas-based captive power plant at the Unit-I vegetable market, advancing its sustainable waste management initiatives. The plant will convert organic waste into green energy, promoting eco-friendly disposal methods.
According to BMC Deputy Commissioner (Sanitation) N Ganesh Babu, the market currently produces 16–17 tonnes of organic waste daily. A pilot plant with a 3-tonne-per-day (TPD) capacity will be installed over 3,500 sq. ft. within the market’s Micro Composting Centre (MCC). The biogas generated will be converted into electricity and fed into the public grid. If successful, the facility’s capacity may be expanded.
A tender has been issued to select an agency for the plant's installation and five-year maintenance. Additionally, six new garbage transfer stations are planned across the city. Waste from these will be routed to the 150-TPD Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at Palasuni and the upcoming 200-TPD compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Meherpalli.
