Honeywell has licensed its bioethanol-to-jet fuel (ETJ) technology to an Indian company, marking a major step in advancing sustainable aviation fuel production in India.
The company is in the process of securing approvals and finalising arrangements, with plans to begin large-scale ETJ fuel production by 2028. Introduced in October 2022, Honeywell’s technology converts ethanol—whether corn-based, cellulosic, or sugar-derived—into jet fuel. Developed at the Honeywell India Technology Center, the solution has attracted strong interest, and the company expects to sign additional licensing agreements by December. India’s robust ethanol output and surplus sugar supply offer a strong base for developing a competitive domestic sustainable aviation fuel market.
Honeywell is also promoting bio-crude production from biomass such as woodchips and agricultural residues, which can be refined into cost-effective fuels. According to Ranjit Kulkarni, these innovations are designed to deliver sustainable energy solutions while reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
