Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has received approval from the Centre to significantly expand the capacity of Mundra port in Gujarat. The expansion plans involve doubling the port's current capacity to 514 million tonnes, with an investment of Rs 45,000 crore. Mundra port, located in Kutch district, currently handles 225 million tonnes of cargo annually and is set to enhance its capabilities to cater to various types of cargo including multi-purpose, liquid, gas, and cryogenic shipments.
The approval was granted by the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) attached to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). This move is part of APSEZ's ambitious Waterfront Development Plan spread across 3,335 hectares at Mundra port. The port, which already boasts of handling 9.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually, plays a crucial role in APSEZ's vision to become the world's largest transport utility and port operator by 2030.
APSEZ currently manages a network of 15 ports and terminals along India's coastline and operates the Haifa Port in Israel. Additionally, the company is in the process of constructing a new box terminal at the Colombo port. Mundra port itself is a key player in India's maritime trade, handling 179.6 million tonnes of cargo, including 7.4 million TEUs, in the fiscal year 2024. It is anticipated to surpass the 200 million tonne mark in cargo handling by the fiscal year 2025, further solidifying its position as India's leading container port by volume.
