Greening the Grid: The Bold New Push for Biogas Integration

Amid mounting energy supply concerns linked to the West Asia conflict, the government has expanded the CBG-CGD Synchronisation Scheme to enable the injection of compressed biogas (CBG) into the existing gas pipeline network.

According to a senior official, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has extended the scheme to allow co-mingling of domestic gas for supply to both CNG (transport) and PNG (domestic) segments within city gas distribution (CGD) networks.

The revised guidelines, first issued in August last year, now formally include CBG within pipeline infrastructure. This move is aimed at diversifying India’s energy mix while promoting cleaner fuel adoption and strengthening energy security.
