Gujarat Bauxite Project Wins EAC Nod Near Marine Park

A controversial bauxite and marl mining project in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district has cleared a key regulatory hurdle, securing an environmental clearance recommendation from the Union Environment Ministry’s EAC. Proposed by L&S Company across a 5-hectare plot in the Mevasa Block, the site alarms conservationists due to its close proximity—under two kilometers—to India's first marine wildlife sanctuary and national park. Although the project's proponents argue that natural barriers separate the site from these fragile coral and mangrove ecosystems, the EAC has attached strict conditions, requiring formal wildlife conservation planning and active mitigation of human-animal conflicts through the Gujarat forest department.
