The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has directed officials to complete all sewage treatment plants (STPs) currently under construction in Gurugram within the next 18 months as part of efforts to strengthen wastewater management and promote sustainable water use.
The directive was issued during a review meeting chaired by GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena, which was attended by officials, project contractors, and stakeholders associated with tertiary treated water utilisation. The authority also instructed departments to expedite the tendering process for proposed projects and ensure timely execution of planned infrastructure upgrades.
In a significant push toward water conservation, GMDA has set a target of achieving 100 percent utilisation of tertiary treated water within the next six months. Advanced treated wastewater is already being used for a range of non-potable applications, including irrigation, industrial operations, groundwater recharge, and maintenance of green spaces. The authority has further directed that treated water should not be discharged into Drain No. 8, reinforcing its commitment to maximising water reuse and minimising wastage.
Several capacity enhancement projects are planned at key facilities, including Dhanwapur, Sector-107, Behrampur, and Manesar, to meet the growing wastewater treatment requirements of the city. GMDA is also exploring the use of treated water for firefighting systems, which could further reduce dependence on freshwater resources.
The initiative supports broader objectives related to sustainable urban water management, wastewater recycling, and the rejuvenation of regional water bodies, including the Yamuna, while strengthening long-term water security in the National Capital Region.
