Himachal's Dairy Upgrade: A Fresh Boost for the Milk Industry

The Himachal Pradesh government has approved the establishment of milk processing plants in Nahan, Nalagarh, Mohal, and Rohru, along with a milk chilling centre at Jalari (Hamirpur) and a bulk milk cooler at Jhalera (Una), as part of a broader effort to upgrade dairy infrastructure across the state.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that the initiative aims to enhance milk quality, improve supply chain efficiency, and ensure fair returns for farmers — with over 90% of the state’s population involved in agriculture.

To promote transparency, the Himachal Pradesh Milk Federation (Milkfed) will implement an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, allowing farmers to digitally access milk collection data, quality test results, payment status, and procurement rates via mobile. The system is expected to reduce errors, eliminate manipulation, and enable faster, direct payments to farmers’ bank accounts.

In addition, a modern milk processing facility at Dhagwar (Kangra) is under construction and will produce a range of value-added products including curd, lassi, butter, ghee, paneer, flavoured milk, khoya, and mozzarella cheese.
