Hindustan Zinc Unlocks Value with ₹3,823 Cr. Reprocessing Plant

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has received Board approval to establish India’s first zinc tailings reprocessing plant at its Rampura Agucha site in Bhilwara, Rajasthan.

The ₹3,823 crore project will create a 10 million tonne per annum (Mtpa) facility to extract residual zinc and silver from previously processed tailings—converting mining waste into valuable resources. The plant is expected to be completed within 28 months.

Tailings are the finely ground byproducts left after mineral extraction, often containing recoverable metals. This initiative aligns with Hindustan Zinc’s push towards circular economy practices, improved resource efficiency, and sustainable mining operations.

CEO Arun Misra stated, “This pioneering project, developed with global experts, reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation. It allows us to reprocess legacy waste while meeting the highest environmental standards, supporting our 2x growth ambition and national demand for zinc.”

The project follows Hindustan Zinc’s earlier ₹12,000 crore investment plan to double production capacity in line with India's growing infrastructure and industrial needs.
