Hyderabad Metro: 60 New Coaches & A New Management Era

Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) plans to procure 60 new metro train coaches and has approached the government for the required clearances, moving ahead without waiting for Phase-II approvals. Once permission is granted, HMR will issue a tender for six-coach train sets, according to Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmad.

At the same time, the government-owned special purpose vehicle is working toward taking over Phase-I operations—spanning 69.2 km—from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) by the end of the current financial year. To support this transition, HMR has appointed IDBI Capital as the financial consultant to review Phase-I’s financial and accounting aspects and is in the process of finalizing a technical consultant. The shortlist includes three public sector firms and three private firms, among them DB and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Additionally, the government is addressing key operational issues such as integrated ticketing, first- and last-mile connectivity, and maintenance of street infrastructure beneath metro stations. Consultations with financial and technical advisors are ongoing, with efforts focused on restructuring existing loans and potentially reorganizing HMR along the lines of DMRC.
