Hyderabad's Future on Track: Outer Ring Rail FLS Approved

The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned the Final Location Survey (FLS) for the proposed Outer Ring Rail (ORR) project, which will run parallel to Telangana’s upcoming Regional Ring Road (RRR). Of the 100-metre-wide RRR corridor, 70 metres will be designated for the expressway and 30 metres for the new railway track.

A senior South Central Railway (SCR) official confirmed that a detailed project report (DPR) will soon be submitted to the state government. The initiative has gained momentum following a recent visit by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who reviewed key infrastructure plans for the region.

The integrated RRR–Ring Rail network aims to enhance multimodal connectivity, enable suburban rail services, improve long-distance train operations, and ease freight congestion. Hyderabad’s suburbs now stretch up to 90 km, placing significant strain on existing rail infrastructure.

Designed to decongest the Hyderabad–Secunderabad–Kacheguda belt, the 392-km Outer Ring Rail will pass through Vikarabad, Medak, Siddipet, Kamareddy, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Nalgonda, and Rangareddy districts. The project is estimated to cost ₹12,408 crore, while the RRR is pegged at ₹34,367.62 crore.

Strategic rail-over-rail intersections will be developed to ensure smooth connectivity across Telangana’s growing suburban and industrial zones, laying the foundation for a more efficient, future-ready transport ecosystem.
