In a significant development for Hyderabad’s Musi River rejuvenation project, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has given in-principle approval for ₹4,100 crore in phased financial assistance.
An ADB mission team recently held discussions with Telangana state officials to review project components, implementation timelines, and the structure of phased disbursements. The funding is expected to be released over two to three phases.
The proposed financing will support the development of world-class riverfront infrastructure, including:
Roads along both riverbanks
Trunk and interceptor sewer networks to divert untreated sewage
New bridges to improve urban connectivity and mobility
This builds on earlier efforts by the previous BRS government, which sanctioned sewage treatment plants (STPs) to ensure wastewater is treated before entering the river.
The Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd. (MRDCL) had initially submitted a ₹5,863 crore proposal to the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) in September 2024. Following detailed clarifications on feasibility, environmental impact, and sustainability, the proposal was cleared two months ago.
While the ₹4,100 crore ADB loan will finance core infrastructure, remaining project components—including beautification, recreational spaces, and public amenities—are expected to be funded through state government allocations, additional foreign aid, or public-private partnerships (PPP).
