Hyderabad's Musi Riverfront: A ₹4,100 Crore Transformation

The Union Government has approved a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the ambitious Musi Riverfront Development Project in Hyderabad, with ₹4,100 crore set to be disbursed in Phase 1.

This marks a major step toward the revitalisation of the Musi River, aiming to transform it into a cultural, recreational, and ecological asset. A consortium of renowned firms—Meinhardt, Cushman & Wakefield, RIOS, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)—is preparing detailed project reports (DPRs), expected within the next two weeks.

Key highlights of the project include the construction of iconic landmarks such as:

The Gateway of Hyderabad at Kothwalguda

Gandhi Sarovar at Bapu Ghat, featuring the world’s tallest statue of Mahatma Gandhi and a museum on Gandhian philosophy

The state government has sought 250 acres from the Defence Ministry, with 100 acres already approved. The broader plan includes riverbed cleaning, creation of walking tracks, amphitheatres, shopping malls, entertainment zones, and night-time economy hubs.

Additionally, the catchment area will showcase statues of prominent Telangana and national figures, positioning the riverfront as a vibrant urban, cultural, and tourism destination.
