India's Biogas Revolution Gets a Boost with €38M German Funding

German Export Finance Bank has committed €38 million (approximately ₹343 crore) in equity and debt funding to Indian cleantech company CEF Group, which specialises in converting waste into compressed biogas (CBG).

The investment will support the construction of two new CBG plants, forming part of CEF’s broader plan to develop 22 such facilities across India. The initiative aligns with the government’s SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme, which promotes the production of clean fuel from agricultural, agro-industrial, and municipal waste, fostering a circular economy.

Founded in 2018, CEF Group is currently advancing three major projects: municipal solid waste plants in Jammu and Ahmedabad, and a press mud-based biogas facility in Western Uttar Pradesh, utilising a sugar industry byproduct.

The SATAT programme is designed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, create rural income opportunities, and tackle waste management challenges. The funding from Germany marks a significant boost to India’s renewable energy ambitions, while also reinforcing global public-private collaboration in the development of sustainable infrastructure.
