Gandhi Hill in Vijayawada—India’s first hilltop memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi—is undergoing a significant redevelopment to become a premier cultural and tourist destination.
Following a ₹1.20 crore facelift in the first phase, a comprehensive ₹90 crore Master Plan has been unveiled to transform the site into the Gandhi India International Centre. Planned developments include a 43-metre-high panoramic lift, modern play zones, scenic landscaping, upgraded sanitation facilities, and a new viewpoint offering sweeping vistas of the city.
The site’s iconic toy train is being restored, while replicas of Sabarmati Ashram, Sevagram, and Porbandar Gandhi House have already been renovated. Upcoming additions include a planetarium, fine arts academy, library, convention hall, and guest accommodation facilities.
Currently drawing around 5,000 visitors daily, Gandhi Hill is expected to attract up to 10,000 visitors once the transformation is complete. The Gandhi Hill Foundation, led by Dr. Gandhi PC Kaza, envisions the site as a vibrant centre for peace, education, and cultural exchange rooted in Gandhian values. District authorities have extended full support to realise this vision and elevate the hill into a global destination.
