Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Balak Ram Negi of the Tiruchirappalli railway division recently reviewed the progress of key railway infrastructure projects across the Cauvery delta region.
During the inspection, Negi assessed the redevelopment works underway at Kumbakonam railway station in Thanjavur district under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). The ₹99-crore project is expected to be completed ahead of the Mahamaham festival in 2028. Railway officials said foundation work has already begun at both the station and its yard.
The DRM also inspected redevelopment projects at Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur and Karaikal railway stations, which are nearing completion under the ABSS. Officials stated that about 95% of the work at Mayiladuthurai station has been completed, while redevelopment at Thanjavur and Karaikal stations has reached around 90%.
As part of the visit, Negi reviewed ongoing improvements at Thirunallar railway station, a key railhead for pilgrims travelling to the renowned Lord Shani temple in Karaikal, Puducherry.
He further examined plans for a new coaching depot at Velankanni railway station in Nagapattinam district. The Railway Board has approved the project to support the growing demand for additional train services in the Cauvery delta region.
Railway officials said these projects are aimed at enhancing passenger facilities, modernising station infrastructure and improving rail connectivity across the region.
