IRFC Injects ₹3,388 Cr into Jharkhand Power Infrastructure

Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) has extended financial assistance of ₹3,388.51 crore to Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (PVUNL)—a joint venture between NTPC and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam—for the development of the Banhardih coal block in Latehar, Jharkhand.

The agreement was signed on September 27, 2025, in Patratu by IRFC Chief General Manager Shwet Ketu Mishra and PVUNL CEO Ashok Kumar Sehgal.

The Banhardih coal block, with estimated reserves of 956 million tonnes, will fuel PVUNL’s upcoming 4,000 MW thermal power project in Patratu. Coal will be transported via the Indian Railways network, ensuring seamless integration with national rail infrastructure.

Recently awarded Navratna status, IRFC is expanding its role beyond railway financing to support infrastructure projects with strong forward and backward linkages, including in mining, energy, and logistics.
