Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a series of transformative development projects totaling over Rs 1,150 crore in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep on January 3, 2024. The projects encompass diverse sectors such as technology, energy, water resources, healthcare, and education.
During the ceremony, the PM dedicated the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project, emphasizing its potential to provide the residents of Lakshadweep with internet speeds 100 times faster. This initiative is expected to enhance various essential services, including government services and medical treatment. Additionally, the PM inaugurated the low-temperature thermal desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, a crucial step towards ensuring a sustainable water supply. The ongoing effort to deliver piped water to every household in Lakshadweep, aiming to produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water daily, was highlighted.
The Prime Minister also dedicated functional household tap connections (FHTC) in all households of Agatti and Minicoy islands, signaling a significant advancement in water infrastructure. In terms of healthcare, he laid the foundation stone for the renovation of the primary health care facility in Kalpeni and the construction of five model Anganwadi Centres (Nand Ghars) in the islands of Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti, and Minicoy.
Emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability, PM Modi inaugurated the first-ever battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep, located in Kavaratti. He stressed the significance of protecting the fragile ecology of the area through such initiatives.
Highlighting the pivotal role of Lakshadweep in India's journey towards becoming a developed nation during the Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal, the Prime Minister disclosed government efforts to position the Union Territory on the international tourism map. Under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, a destination-specific master plan is being formulated to boost tourism in Lakshadweep.
