The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, has seen significant progress as the government accelerates efforts across several mandals, including Mangalagiri, Ponnur, Prathipadu, Tadikonda, and Tenali. Aiming to ensure every household has access to safe drinking water, the mission has already provided tap connections to 1.5 lakh out of the 2.33 lakh targeted households in the district.
The mission has allocated substantial funds for various works across these mandals: ₹28.82 crore for 30 works in Mangalagiri, ₹33.43 crore for 96 works in Ponnur, ₹70.90 crore for 175 works in Prathipadu, ₹45.24 crore for 98 works in Tadikonda, and ₹27 crore for 55 works in Tenali. However, progress varies, with some areas having completed more projects than others. To address the backlog and expedite the mission, the newly formed TDP-led government has prepared fresh proposals for additional works, totaling ₹182.72 crore across the five mandals.
The JJM initiative aims to provide 55 liters of safe drinking water per person per day in rural areas. The mission is being executed in three phases: extending existing water supplies, enhancing pipeline capacity, and constructing new water supply projects. The first phase focuses on villages with an existing supply of 40 liters per person, while the subsequent phases target pipeline expansion and new construction.
Launched in 2021, the Jal Jeevan Mission is a central government initiative scheduled for completion by 2025. Despite the progress made, 197 works worth ₹106.89 crore remain uninitiated, requiring prompt decisions to ensure timely completion. The mission's success is crucial for improving the quality of life in rural Andhra Pradesh by ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water for all households.
