Jawahar Shetkari Sahkari Sakhar Karkhana Limited (JSSSKL) is coming up with an expansion project for its sugar manufacturing unit at Hupari Yalgad, Tal Hathkanangale, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The expansion project is expected to increase the crushing capacity of the unit from 12,000 TCD to 16,000 TCD. The Project will Cost 5 Crores.
Sugar is a major agricultural product in India and is an important source of income for farmers. The demand for sugar is growing globally due to the increasing population and rising disposable incomes. The expansion project will help to meet the growing demand for sugar in India and around the world.
Sugarcane is harvested manually or mechanically and transported to the sugar mill. The sugarcane is cleaned and cut into smaller pieces to facilitate processing. The sugarcane is crushed to extract the juice, which contains about 10-15% sucrose. The juice is clarified to remove impurities and non-sugar components using a combination of methods, including filtration, centrifugation, and chemical treatment. The clarified juice is concentrated by evaporating water, resulting in a thick syrup containing about 60-70% sucrose.
The syrup is cooled and agitated under controlled conditions to induce the formation of sugar crystals. The crystallized syrup is centrifuged to separate the sugar crystals from the molasses, a byproduct containing non-sugar components. The sugar crystals are washed, dried, and graded to produce different types of sugar, such as raw sugar, refined sugar, and caster sugar. Molasses can be further processed to produce ethanol, rum, and other byproducts.
As on November 2023, The project is now in the stage of receiving approvals. The project has received all necessary clearances. By the end of the year 2023, development on the project will have begun.
