Significant progress has been made on the Pune–Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48) flyover project along the Satara–Kagal stretch, particularly through Karad city, where 1,223 pre-cast concrete segments have been successfully installed.
Each segment, weighing between 125 and 135 tonnes, contributes to a 3.5 km elevated structure supported by 93 single pillars. The segments are manufactured at a nearby casting facility and transported to the site, where they are lifted into place and secured using heavy-duty nuts, iron bars, and cement to ensure structural stability and long-term durability.
The six-laning project was launched in October 2021, with the foundation stone laid by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. Although initial progress was hindered by worker shortages and payment-related delays, construction has since accelerated.
The flyover will be elevated on both sides of the highway. Approximately 70% of work on the Kolhapur end has been completed, while work on the Pune end is yet to commence. Once finished, the project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and enhance vehicle movement through the Karad stretch of this high-traffic corridor.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has extended the contractor’s deadline to March 2025. The project’s total estimated cost stands at ₹500 crore.
