Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ₹1.5 lakh crore in central assistance to elevate Bengaluru into a “global metropolis” through a series of large-scale infrastructure and urban development projects.
A central component of the proposal is the development of five semi-high-speed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors, modeled on the Delhi–Meerut line — India’s first operational RRTS (55 km of the 82 km stretch functional since October 2023). The proposed routes include:
Bengaluru–Mysuru, Harohalli–Kanakapura, Nelamangala–Tumakuru, Airport–Chikkaballapur, Hoskote–Kolar
Other major infrastructure projects include:
128 km of Namma Metro Phase 3 and 3A, Underground tunnels (e.g., Hosur–Bellary Road and KR Puram–Mysuru Road)
Elevated corridors and 40 km of double-decker roads, A 73 km, eight-lane Peripheral Ring Road, estimated at ₹27,000 crore
To tackle solid waste management, the government has proposed four major processing plants equipped with composting, bio-CNG, and waste-to-energy technologies, seeking ₹1,000 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0.
Additional proposals include the development of 300 km of buffer roads along stormwater drains to prevent flooding and Phase-6 of the Cauvery Water Supply Project, which aims to deliver an additional 500 million litres per day (MLD) by 2028.
These projects collectively aim to address Bengaluru’s urban challenges while positioning it as a globally competitive, sustainable, and liveable city.
