Kochi Tech Meets Gomti Tides: The Rise of the Water Metro

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is planning to launch a Water Metro system on the Gomti River in Lucknow to strengthen urban transport and promote river-based mobility.

The project’s technical feasibility was recently reviewed in a meeting attended by Kochi Metro Rail Limited Director Sanjay Kumar and Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh. The proposed Water Metro will feature modern navigation, safety, and passenger handling systems. Preparatory work is expected to begin shortly, while similar projects are also being considered on other water bodies across the state, including stretches of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, as well as Surha Tal and Ramgarh Tal. Feasibility studies for three key locations have already been completed.

Once operational, the Water Metro is expected to improve urban connectivity, boost tourism, generate employment, and spur economic activity along riverfront areas. Before implementation, the project will require technical and environmental clearances, including assessments related to navigational aids, traffic management, environmental safeguards, and supporting infrastructure. Following these evaluations, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared outlining project costs and implementation timelines.
