Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has initiated a feasibility study to explore the extension of Water Metro services to Cochin International Airport, focusing on the canal network near Nedumbassery.
The three-month study will evaluate the navigability of the canal and its suitability for operating waterway transport. Upon completion, KMRL will submit a comprehensive proposal to the state government for approval.
The proposed eight-kilometre waterway, running along the Periyar River, aims to provide commuters with a faster, congestion-free connection to the airport, helping reduce traffic on major arterial roads.
As part of the project, an aerial walkway is also planned to link the Metro station directly with the airport terminal, enhancing last-mile connectivity.
This initiative supports the government’s broader vision to replicate the Water Metro model across other Indian cities, establishing seamless triple-mode connectivity — Metro, Water Metro, and Air — at Kochi Airport.
