Kurseong's ₹101 Cr. Water Mega-Project Underway

Kurseong is set for a major civic infrastructure upgrade with the foundation stone for a ₹100.99-crore project laid on 22 November 2025 at Monteviot Ground by GTA Chief Executive Anit Thapa.

Under the AMRUT 2.0 water supply and strengthening programme—jointly funded by the Centre, the state government and the municipality—the town aims to resolve its long-standing drinking water crisis. The initiative will introduce household metering and ensure a reliable piped water supply, with completion targeted within 30 months (2026–27). Officials describe the project as a “transformative shift” in Kurseong’s basic civic services. The Balason River will serve as the main water source for all 20 municipal wards, benefiting approximately 42,446 residents.

Major components include an 18.5 MLD collector system, 11 strategically located distribution reservoirs, and nearly 94 km of new gravity-fed pipelines. A smart water management system will track flow, pressure and consumption in real time. The project replaces ageing, leak-prone infrastructure and addresses chronic dry-season shortages caused by scattered natural sources.
