The Government of India has approved a revised project cost of ₹1,925.28 crore under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP)-2015 for the construction of critical transmission lines and grid stations in Ladakh’s Nubra and Zanskar regions.
Originally estimated at ₹1,203.08 crore, the cost was revised following detailed evaluation by the Ministry of Power’s Monitoring Committee during 2022–23.
Project Scope:
220 kV Phyang–Disket transmission line (Nubra), 220 kV Drass–Padum transmission line (Zanskar), Executed by REC Power Development and Consultancy Ltd (RECPDCL), POWERGRID serves as the project consultant
The project aims to:
Strengthen Ladakh’s power infrastructure, Phase out diesel generator (DG) sets, replacing:
~20 DG stations (7 MVA) in Nubra, ~8 DG stations (5 MVA) in Zanskar, Support cleaner, more reliable energy access in remote areas
Key technical adjustments include realignments in ecologically sensitive zones such as Manman Top and Drang Drung Glacier. The project is scheduled for completion by October 2026.
To date, ₹99 crore has been disbursed for wildlife clearances, ensuring smooth project execution moving forward.
