Kochi’s long-pending Chilavannoor Canal widening and bridge project has moved a step closer to execution, with the Revenue Department approving land acquisition for the initiative.
Based on recommendations from an expert committee following the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) conducted in July, approval has been granted to acquire 0.22 hectares in Elamkulam and Poonithura villages of Kanayannur taluk. The land will be used for constructing the new Chilavannoor bridge and approach road, a key component of the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) under Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL).
The state government has already approved a ₹38.77 crore tender for the bridge, which will span 90 metres and is designed to be an iconic structure, addressing urban flooding and traffic congestion in the area.
In a related development, the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) had earlier sanctioned ₹32.58 crore for the reconstruction of the Bund Road bridge across the same canal, with execution awarded to ULCCS. Together, these projects are expected to significantly improve drainage, reduce stagnation, and ease mobility in Kochi.
