Machilipatnam’s Maritime Makeover: A New Era for Shipbuilding

Andhra Pradesh is preparing to establish a major shipbuilding and ship repair facility in Machilipatnam, in a move aimed at harnessing the state’s maritime potential and strengthening its port-led industrial growth.

The project will be implemented on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model, combining private sector expertise with public oversight. Special Chief Secretary MT Krishna Babu stated that the initiative is expected to attract reputed global and domestic players with strong technical and financial credentials. The preparatory process is underway, with the Tender Evaluation Committee and the Empowered Procurement Committee (EPC) having approved the draft Request for Proposal (RFP).

Machilipatnam MP V Balashowry welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to reshape the region’s economic landscape. He noted that the facility is expected to generate substantial employment, boost ancillary industries, and promote skill development. The project forms a key component of Andhra Pradesh’s broader strategy to drive sustainable, investor-led growth in the port and industrial sectors.
