In a significant stride towards the revitalization of Dharavi, the Maharashtra cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, endorsed a pivotal proposal on Monday. The initiative, championed by the state housing department, involves acquiring 283.40 acres of salt pan lands in Mumbai from the Union government under a 99-year lease for rehabilitation endeavors.
According to the official announcement, another proposal delineating the use of these salt pan lands for the rehabilitation of specific Dharavi residents within the slum redevelopment scheme will be promptly submitted to the Union government.
To ensure equitable compensation for the 283.40 acres of land, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) established for the redevelopment of the Dharavi slum colony will take charge. Subsequently, the recovered funds will be remitted to the Centre.
Last July marked a significant milestone as the Maharashtra government awarded the Dharavi redevelopment project, spanning 259 hectares, to a firm within the Adani group. This ambitious venture, to be orchestrated by an SPV, aims to rejuvenate Dharavi, the largest slum enclave in Asia nestled in central Mumbai.
