Maharashtra & Warana Group Collaborate on 240 MW Pumped Hydro

The Government of Maharashtra has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Shri Tatyasaheb Kore Warana Cooperative Navshakti Nirman Sanstha to develop a 240 MW pumped storage hydropower project (PSHP) at Tillari Dam in Sindhudurg district. This is the first PSHP MoU signed with a cooperative entity among the 16 such agreements executed in the state to date.

The project entails an investment of ₹1,008 crore and will operate by using water from an upper reservoir to generate electricity via pressure turbines, which will then be pumped back—enabling efficient, large-scale energy storage. The pumping operations will be powered by a co-located floating solar plant, significantly reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 5 lakh tonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to the emissions from approximately 4.5 lakh vehicles.

Vinay Kore, MLA and head of the Warana Group, emphasized the project's importance in improving grid stability, especially as renewable energy sources grow but remain intermittently reliable. He also noted the Group’s experience in executing four prior hydroelectric projects.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised the Warana Group’s contributions across various sectors and expressed confidence in the timely execution of the project, calling it a major step toward Maharashtra’s energy security and sustainable development.
