Mahindra Charges Ahead: Battery Plant to Power EV Ambitions

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is actively considering the establishment of a battery manufacturing facility to support its burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) segment. The company is in the process of assessing the feasibility of such a plant and is also exploring potential partnerships to bolster its efforts.

As part of its forward-thinking strategy, M&M is contemplating discussions with Volkswagen regarding the localization of battery cells in India. This was disclosed by an executive from M&M's Auto & Farm Sector during an analyst meeting, indicating the company's proactive approach to advancing its EV initiatives.

In 2022, M&M initiated a collaboration with Volkswagen aimed at accelerating the electrification drive in the country. This collaboration included the potential utilization of Volkswagen's MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform for Mahindra's EVs. Subsequently, in 2023, Volkswagen announced advanced discussions with M&M regarding the utilization of key MEB components, such as the e-drive and unified cells, for its own models.

Looking ahead to 2025, M&M has ambitious plans for its EV lineup. The company is poised to introduce a range of electric vehicles including Born Electric (BE), XUV.e, THAR.e, SCORPIO.e, and BOLERO.e, underscoring its commitment to sustainable mobility and innovation in the automotive industry.
