Making a Splash: Veolia’s Multi-Billion Litre Bet on Mumbai

Veolia, the French water and wastewater management major, is poised to supply nearly 60% of Mumbai’s drinking water needs by 2030 through two large water treatment plants at Bhandup and Panjrapur.

Together, the facilities will deliver close to 3,000 million litres per day (MLD), significantly strengthening the city’s water supply infrastructure. Guillaume Dourdin, CEO and Country Director of Veolia India, stated that the Bhandup plant is expected to become operational by 2029, with the Panjrapur facility scheduled for commissioning in 2030.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has awarded a ₹4,124 crore contract to Welspun Enterprises for the construction of the 2,000 MLD Bhandup water treatment plant, with Veolia providing the core technology. Once completed, it will rank among the largest water treatment plants globally in terms of capacity. In addition, BMC has awarded Welspun the contract for a 910 MLD water treatment plant at Panjrapur in Thane district, further augmenting Mumbai’s long-term water security.
