A new Vande Bharat Express service connecting Mangaluru and Bengaluru is expected to commence operations next month, according to V Somanna during his visit to Mangaluru Junction railway station.
The minister said electrification work on the route has been completed and that the Prime Minister will flag off the service along with other new Vande Bharat trains. He also stated that a feasibility study is underway for a new railway station near Mangaluru International Airport.
Somanna added that the proposal to convert the popular Mangaluru–Subrahmanya Road passenger train into a MEMU service is currently under consideration.
Meanwhile, the Mangaluru Junction railway station is being modernised at an estimated cost of ₹38 crore and is expected to reopen in October. In addition, a ₹40-crore freight yard project is scheduled for completion by March 2027.
The Railway Ministry is also planning the doubling of the Hassan–Mangaluru rail line at an estimated investment of ₹8,300 crore. Surveys have additionally been completed for upgrading train speeds on the Shornur–Mangaluru section to 160 kmph.
