Surveys for the preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Pranahita–Chevella barrage at Tummudihatti are nearing completion, with the consultant, Aarvee Associates, now shifting its survey work to the Sundilla area.
The DPR, expected to be submitted to the state government shortly, will detail key components of the project, including the conveyance of water through gravity canals from the barrage to the spipelines, and the subsequent lifting of water through pipelines for the Yellampalli irrigation project. The proposed barrage is planned about 1.5 km upstream of Tummudihatti near Shivuni. An earlier DPR had proposed a barrage height of 148 metres, which had received agreement. The state government is also examining an alternative proposal to integrate the Pranahita–Chevella barrage with the Chennur Lift Irrigation Scheme (CLIS).
In 2022, the previous BRS government had estimated the cost of the CLIS at ₹1,658 crore to provide irrigation and drinking water to 103 villages in Mancherial district. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has indicated willingness to cooperate on the proposed barrage, particularly with regard to the potential submergence of nearly two lakh acres in Maharashtra. Preliminary surveys have already identified likely submergence areas, and sites at the confluence of the Vainganga and Wardha rivers have been inspected.
