Medanta’s Next Big Move: A ₹550 Crore Healthcare Hub for Varanasi

Medanta, a leading private tertiary care provider in North and East India, has announced plans to establish a 400-bed multi-specialty hospital in central Varanasi. The project will be developed through a built-to-suit lease arrangement with Shripal Hospitality and its partners, while Medanta will invest approximately ₹550 crore in interiors, medical equipment, and fit-outs.

Strategically located on a freehold land parcel, the hospital aims to serve a population of over 4 million in Varanasi and surrounding regions. It will offer advanced clinical care supported by cutting-edge technology, expert medical professionals, and a comprehensive range of specialties.

This expansion strengthens Medanta’s presence in Uttar Pradesh, where it already operates a 950-bed flagship hospital in Lucknow and a 550-bed facility in Noida. Once operational, the Varanasi hospital will increase the group’s total capacity in the state to around 1,900 beds, further solidifying its footprint in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Commenting on the development, Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Naresh Trehan emphasized Medanta’s commitment to expanding access to high-quality, patient-centric healthcare in densely populated regions. CEO Pankaj Sahni added that the project addresses a critical gap in tertiary care in Varanasi, where most existing hospitals are relatively small, and will bring advanced treatment options closer to the community.

The upcoming hospital is expected to emerge as a key healthcare hub in eastern Uttar Pradesh, meeting rising demand for specialized medical services and reinforcing Medanta’s leadership in the region.
