Railways Allocate ₹505 Crore as Angamaly–Sabarimala Rail Project Advances

he long-anticipated Angamaly–Sabarimala railway line project has taken a crucial step forward as the Kerala government initiates land acquisition proceedings, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha.

Administered by Southern Railway, the 111-km project—first sanctioned in 1997-98—is designed to vastly improve transit for millions of Sabarimala pilgrims and regional commuters. The line will pass through 14 key stations including Kalady, Perumbavoor, Muvattupuzha, Kanjirappally, and Erumeli.

To ensure steady execution, the Ministry of Railways has earmarked ₹505 crore for FY 2026–27. While early development occurred on the Angamaly–Kalady stretch, broader progress was previously stalled by local resistance, legal disputes, and land clearance issues. Authorities are currently focused on securing the remaining 279 hectares of the required 302-hectare footprint.
