The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, a 6.032-km corridor connecting Koteshwar Road to Ahmedabad Airport at an estimated cost of ₹2,169.04 crore. The project will feature five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station, enhancing connectivity across key parts of the city.
The new metro stretch will provide direct access to Ahmedabad Airport while improving links between residential, commercial, and transit hubs that currently have limited public transport options. Once completed, the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km, further strengthening the region’s urban mobility infrastructure.
The project is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce dependence on private vehicles, improve travel efficiency, and enhance road safety by offering a reliable and sustainable public transportation alternative. It will also support future urban development and large-scale international events planned for the region, including the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030.
In addition to improving connectivity, the metro expansion is projected to generate significant employment opportunities, creating around 2,000 jobs during the construction phase and approximately 500 jobs during operations and maintenance, contributing to the region’s economic growth and development.
