Mega Pipeline Project: Rajasthan & Haryana Finalize Yamuna Deal

In a major breakthrough for regional water diplomacy, Rajasthan and Haryana have formalized an agreement to construct the Yamuna Water Project. Resolving a three-decade-old dispute under the 1994 Upper Yamuna Basin MoU, the project establishes an underground pipeline network to transport Rajasthan’s allocated share of water from the Western Yamuna Canal.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the infrastructure will feature three pipelines exceeding 3.6 meters in diameter, designed to deliver 580 million cubic metres (MCM) of water seasonally between July and October. The project directly addresses critical drinking water shortages in Rajasthan's Sikar, Churu, and Jhunjhunu districts, alongside Haryana's Bhiwani and Fatehabad districts.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the pact as a shining example of cooperative federalism. In addition to securing drinking water, the project is structured to boost groundwater recharge by diverting excess water into regional ponds. The comprehensive framework covers all operational facets, including financial liabilities, maintenance, transparency metrics, and dispute-resolution protocols.
