Mega Port Expansion: Mumbai’s Gateway to Global Trade

On August 12, 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, and Minister of Transport Jeffrey Siow conducted a joint inspection of Phase 2 of PSA’s Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Uran.

The high-level visit assessed the terminal’s readiness ahead of its upcoming formal inauguration, which is set to significantly enhance container handling capacity at India’s busiest container port. Operated by PSA International, a Singapore-based port group, BMCT plays a critical role in JNPA’s broader strategy to modernise maritime infrastructure and strengthen India’s integration into global trade networks.

Phase 2 of the terminal will bring in advanced container handling technology, expanded berthing capacity, and improved turnaround times for vessels—positioning BMCT as a world-class logistics hub and further solidifying India’s global shipping presence.

The visit underscored growing India–Singapore infrastructure cooperation, with both delegations expressing optimism that the expansion will lead to increased trade volumes, job creation, and economic growth in Maharashtra.

“This project will play a vital role in enhancing India’s trade competitiveness,” officials stated, reaffirming BMCT’s strategic significance within the nation’s export-import ecosystem.
