M&M is planning to increase its mfg unit by March 2024

Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) is set to embark on an ambitious plan to double its production capacity within the next three to four years. This strategic expansion will encompass both conventional fossil fuel-based and cutting-edge battery-operated models across the personal and commercial vehicle segments.

With a substantial investment ranging from Rs 3,500 crore to Rs 5,000 crore, M&M is poised to elevate its SUV production capacity, with a particular emphasis on its popular Scorpio N and THAR models. The company envisions a surge in capacity to manufacture 49,000 SUVs per month by March 2024. Simultaneously, M&M is steering towards a future-oriented approach by focusing on electric vehicles (EVs) as a key driver for expansion. This enhanced production capacity is not only geared towards meeting the escalating domestic demand but also positioning M&M as a formidable player in international markets.

Anticipated to commence from the fiscal year 2025, M&M aims to achieve a total installed capacity of 1.1 to 1.2 million units annually for its automotive business, inclusive of pick-up trucks, by the fiscal year 2028/29. This ambitious target includes a doubling of SUV production, reaching an impressive 85,000-90,000 units per month.

The phased execution of this capacity expansion initiative will kick off with the Nasik plant in Maharashtra. This facility, renowned for producing the Bolero range of vehicles, is slated to witness a capacity boost from the current 14,000 units per month to an impressive 28,000 units per month in the first phase. Subsequent phases will witness capacity augmentation at the Chakan plant, primarily focusing on EV production, and the Zahirabad plant, respectively. M&M's strategic approach underscores its commitment to meeting the evolving demands of the automotive industry while embracing the future of sustainable mobility.
