Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the trial run of Metro Line 4A connecting Thane and Mumbai on 22 September 2025, announcing that the full Metro Line 4 project will be completed by the end of 2026, with operations beginning in 2027.
The 58-km-long Metro Line 4 is expected to serve 21 lakh daily commuters, with Metro 4A alone projected to carry around 13 lakh passengers. The first phase, covering 10.5 km between Cadbury Junction and Gaimukh in Thane, is scheduled to open by December 2025. The corridor will feature 32 stations, with six-coach trains stopping at key locations including Majiwada and Kasarvadavali.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hailed the event as historic, noting that it marks the introduction of Thane’s first metro service, 172 years after railways were first introduced to the city.
The state government has also approved additional Metro loop projects to enhance connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). These loops aim to link major areas such as Kalyan-Dombivli and Wadala-CST, significantly improving last-mile connectivity for commuters and easing urban transit congestion.
