Originally proposed in the 1967 Development Plan, the long-awaited Madh-Versova bridge is now on the brink of construction. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is currently awaiting final approvals from the Forest Department and the Bombay High Court, with construction expected to begin by October 2025.
Spanning 2.06 km across the Versova creek, the bridge will link the Madh and Versova jetties. Estimated to cost between ₹2,395 crore and ₹3,984 crore, the project promises to significantly reduce travel time and will integrate with the upcoming Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road, boosting connectivity across Mumbai’s northern suburbs.
Designed as a cable-stayed bridge, the structure includes a 100-meter-high stainless steel pylon built to withstand harsh coastal conditions while minimizing environmental impact, particularly on surrounding mangroves.
Currently, commuters rely on a five-minute ferry ride or face a 90-minute, 22-kilometer road journey. The new bridge will offer a much-needed alternative, with alignment adjustments made to reduce disruption to local fishing communities.
Residents have long advocated for the project, which is expected to improve access to essential services such as hospitals, schools, and markets in Versova.
