Bhubaneswar is planning to connect all 450 slum settlements in the city to its sewerage network, as part of ongoing initiatives to strengthen urban sanitation and water infrastructure.
During a recent meeting chaired by Aparajita Sarangi, Member of Parliament from Bhubaneswar, Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) Managing Director Debabrata Mohanty presented plans to integrate the remaining areas into the city’s sewerage system. At present, the city faces a shortfall of around 65 MLD in potable water supply.
To address the gap, a 130 MLD capacity water treatment plant (WTP) is being developed at Mundali, along with a 30 MLD master balancing reservoir at Sikharchandi. These projects are expected to strengthen water supply to nearly 730 apartment complexes across the city.
Looking ahead, authorities are also considering a proposal to build an additional 400 MLD water treatment plant to meet the city’s future water demand by 2047, aligning with the national **Viksit Bharat vision.
In addition, regular water quality monitoring is being carried out through internal laboratories and departmental staff responsible for sample collection and testing, ensuring safe and reliable drinking water supply for residents.
