The Centre has approved ₹257 crore under the Urban Challenge Fund (UCF) to support infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹1,900 crore proposed by the Nashik Municipal Corporation ahead of the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
The funding is aimed at accelerating major urban infrastructure upgrades, including expansion of the road network, augmentation of water supply systems, strengthening of sewerage infrastructure and improvements in urban mobility to manage the anticipated increase in pilgrim traffic during the Kumbh Mela.
Key components of the plan also include rejuvenation of the Godavari River and the development of a more integrated city transport network under the Nashik Integrated Road Mobility Augmentation and Logistics initiative.
Officials said the Centre’s approval reflects confidence in the civic body’s planning and implementation capabilities while helping fast-track several long-pending infrastructure projects. The approved grant will cover around 15 per cent of the total project cost, with the remaining funds expected to be mobilised through municipal resources and other financing mechanisms.
Among the major allocations, ₹100 crore has been earmarked for a water treatment plant, ₹56 crore for the Clean Godavari mission and ₹37 crore for parking and civic infrastructure development.
The Nashik Municipal Corporation has been directed to submit detailed implementation plans, with officials stating that the proposed upgrades are expected to improve the city’s resilience and preparedness for the upcoming Kumbh Mela.
