Nashik Metro Back on Track: State Revives High-Speed Transit Plans

The Maharashtra government has revived deliberations on developing a mass rapid transit system for Nashik, nearly a year after the proposed Metro Neo project was placed on hold, reflecting renewed efforts to address the city’s growing mobility and transportation requirements.

A high-level review meeting held at Mantralaya in Mumbai brought together senior officials from the Urban Development Department, Maha Metro, the Nashik district administration and the Nashik Municipal Corporation to evaluate future public transport options for the city. The meeting was chaired by Urban Development Department Under Secretary Asim Kumar Gupta and attended by Divisional Commissioner Dr. Praveen Gedam, Kumbh Mela Commissioner Shekhar Singh and senior representatives of Maha Metro.

With passenger volumes on several key corridors reportedly exceeding 20,000 commuters per hour, authorities are reassessing the most appropriate mass transit solution to support Nashik’s urban growth and increasing travel demand. Various alternatives were discussed during the meeting, including a conventional metro rail system, light metro, light rail transit (LRT), monorail networks and a revised version of the previously proposed Metro Neo system.

The final decision on the transit model will be guided by the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) currently being prepared by Maha Metro. The study is expected to provide a detailed assessment of travel patterns, future demand projections and infrastructure requirements, forming the foundation for long-term transportation planning and investment in Nashik.

The initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to developing sustainable urban mobility solutions that can improve connectivity, reduce congestion and support the city’s continued economic and demographic growth.
