Navi Mumbai Takes Flight: Airport Ready for 2025!

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced that the Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to commence commercial operations by March 2025. The airport project, initiated in 2018 and progressing through five phases, has achieved approximately 55 to 60 percent completion to date.

During a recent inspection, the Minister assessed the ongoing developments related to the airport. The initial two phases, scheduled to begin simultaneously, will include a single runway, one terminal, and a capacity to accommodate two crore passengers. Subsequently, the following three phases will incorporate a second runway and four terminals, increasing the overall passenger capacity to nine crore.

The upcoming airport will boast seamless connectivity via road, rail, and metro, with plans for water connectivity as well. It will be linked to NH-4B (348), the Sion-Panvel highway, and the Atal Setu. Additionally, the airport will be connected to the Targhar railway station and metro lines 2D (DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd), 8 (Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport), and the Pendhar-Belapur-Taloja line. Future plans include connectivity through hovercraft from Colaba in south Mumbai and cargo liners from Raigad in phase-II.

Distinguishing itself, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is poised to become the first in the country with automated passenger movement within its expansive 1,600 hectares, covering 10 kilometers on the city side and the airside. Aligning with the Union government's vision, there is an ambitious goal to double domestic air passenger traffic from the current 15 crore to 30 crore by 2030, accompanied by plans to establish over 200 airports within the next six years.
