Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited Unveils Mammoth Steel Expansion in Odisha

Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL), a prominent player in the Indian steel industry, is embarking on a colossal expansion with its ambitious Steel Unit Project at Kalinga Nagar, Jajpur, Odisha. With an estimated investment of 61,769.03 Crores, this expansion is poised to be a transformative force in the landscape of the Indian steel sector.

Situated in Kalinga Nagar, Jajpur, Odisha, the project involves the expansion of the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) capacity by 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and the construction of a state-of-the-art 4.5 MTPA long products mill. The anticipated completion of this ambitious endeavor is set for 2030, reflecting the scale and complexity of the project.

The potential benefits of this expansion are manifold. By increasing India's steel production capacity, the project aims to reduce the country's dependence on steel imports, positioning it as a significant player in the global steel market. Moreover, the expansion is expected to generate thousands of jobs, providing a substantial economic boost to Odisha and the surrounding region. As of the current status, the project is in its planning stages. Tata Steel, which acquired a majority stake in NINL in July 2022, has announced its commitment to restarting the expansion project and proceeding with the construction of the new long products mill. This signifies a renewed vigor and commitment to the growth and development of the Indian steel industry.

As on January, 2024. Project has gotten approvals. All approvals were granted. By March 2024, project construction will begin.
