New Energy, New Assam: Inside the ₹350 Crore Solar Expansion

On January 15, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a 70 MW solar power project at Khudimari Part-II in Dhubri district, marking a major milestone in the state’s transition to renewable energy.

Developed at an investment of ₹350 crore and spread across nearly 1,000 bighas of land, the project is expected to generate around 141 million units of electricity annually. Highlighting Assam’s rapid progress in clean energy adoption, the Chief Minister said the project reflects the state’s strong commitment to sustainable development.

With the commissioning of this plant, Assam’s total installed solar capacity has increased to 680 MW. The project has been developed by SJVN Green Energy in collaboration with the Assam Power Distribution Company, strengthening the state’s power infrastructure.

The Chief Minister also announced a 50 MW solar power project in Sonitpur, which will raise Assam’s solar capacity to 730 MW by April. Looking ahead, the state has set an ambitious target of achieving 2,000 MW of solar capacity in the coming years.
